About ABS

ABS is a thermoplastic polymer (actually a terpolymer). It is made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN) in the presence of polybutadiene rubber. Acrylonitrile provides chemical resistance and heat stability. Styrene provided rigidity and a glossy finish. And lastly, butadiene provides toughness and impact resistance.

JEDA Polymers produces many standard formulations of ABS with prime or recycled feedstocks. JEDA Polymers adds value to these engineering resins by increasing stiffness and tensile properties with the addition of fiberglass. In addition, these products can be further enhanced by adding UV additives, anti-stat additives, and lubricity to reduce wear on sliding components.

Key Properties of ABS

Impact Strength

Very good.

Surface Finish

Excellent; ABS is glossy and easy to paint or plate.

Heat Resistance

Moderate; the glass transition temperature, Tg, 90°C – 105°C.

Chemical Resistance

Good for diluted acids and alkalis, but sensitive to solvents.

Processability

Excellent. ABS is easy to mold or extrude.

Common Applications of ABS

Electronics

Enclosures for computers, monitors, printers

Automotive

Interior trim, dashboards, grilles

Consumer Products

Game pieces, toy building blocks, luggage components, sporting goods

Household

Appliances, vacuum cleaner housings, power tool bodies

Plating

Often electroplated for decorative or functional chrome-like finishes

Performance Overview

ABS is valued for its processing ease, excellent part finish, excellent toughness, plateability and colorability. However, ABS is UV sensitive, burns easily unless flame retardants are added, and is subject to stress cracking with some organic solvents.

Color Options

JEDA Polymers excels in small batch pre-coloring. Utilizing our proprietary color production process, JEDA Polymers offers cost-effective custom color solutions with rapid lead times.

Whether you need standard or custom ABS resins in natural, black, or a specific color, and affordability is key, JEDA Polymers can help.
